Cyberattacks are on the increase. So are credit card scams, and e-commerce fraud. And healthcare seems to be the most targeted industry sector by cyber threats. 
But you can take steps to help stay more secure. Some of these are stating the obvious, but they’re worth repeating.
- Passwords. Don’t use the same password for multiple accounts. If you have trouble remembering them, consider using a password manager.
- Checking out from online retailers. Use the guest account, unless you’re collecting points. Otherwise, your information is stored in the retailers system and it can be compromised if they’re the victim of a data breach.
- Verify websites. Check that there’s a lock in front of the https://www in the address line. And that the website is valid.
- Links in emails. Don’t click on them! If you think it’s valid, open a new browser window and enter the website directly. If it doesn’t take you to where you thought it should, delete it.
- Online purchases. Use a credit card instead of a debit card. Debit cards link directly to your bank account, credit cards don’t. And most credit card companies offer good fraud protection.
