We all know that healthcare in the United States is expensive. Even a simple trip to a clinic for an ear infection can cost hundreds of dollars. And then there’s the cost of prescription drugs. One experience we had was that an antibiotic that cost $225 US in New York State, was only $37 Canadian at home.
So staying healthy is a major concern for those travelling to a warmer climate this winter. Here are some suggestions for your patients to help them stay healthy.
Vaccines
Flu, pneumonia, shingles and COVID vaccines are readily available for those who quality (free shingles vaccine is age dependent). According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, getting the flu vaccine can reduce the chance of making a flu-related doctor’s visit by 40 – 60%. Patients should get these shots several weeks before travelling to allow their body time to build upimmunity.
Strengthening the Immune System
Vitamin C and zinc can help bolster the immune system. As will avoiding sugar, which depletes the immune system. Vitamin C and zinc are potent antioxidants that can help enhance the immune system. For best effect, start them at least a month before travelling and continue to taking them while away.
Avoid Crowds
The fewer people that your patients come in contact with, the lower their chance of being infected. The common cold, flu and other viruses are often transmitted through airborne viral droplets. In tightly packed spaces (think: a museum or theater) the risk of getting sick increases.
One suggestion is to simply avoiding peak times. Google can provide information on how busy a restaurant or attraction is expected to be that day based on recent data. And if they need to be in the thick of a crowd, wearing a well-fitting N95 or KN95 mask is important. Research has found this can lower people’s odds of catching COVID-19 by 83%.
Rest
Sleep is the fuel that keeps the immune system energized and ready to fight germs. Sleeping seven to nine hours a night also applies while travelling. But if a too lit hotel room or jet lag makes sleeping a challenge, there are a few things to do to get quality rest. Consider making travelling plans to arrive at the destination in the middle of the day instead of booking an overnight train, plane, or bus ride. This will allow for a good night’s sleep before leaving and on arrival. Think about packing a portable travel pillow to support the neck. And an eye mask and earplugs can also help.
Avoid over scheduling for when first arriving to allow time to catch up on rest and sleep and adjust to new time zones.
Routines
If exercising at home is part of a routine, keep it up while travelling. Think about eating healthy even at restaurants. Stay hydrated. Practise good wellness habits year-round and stay with them when travelling.
